CREATE THE PERFECT WORKSHOP

USING THESE 3 OVERLOOKED SECRETS

Most people use their garages for storing their cars or lawn equipment. However, you can do so much more with your garage than that! If you organize it wisely, you can turn your garage into a home workshop where you can fix things that break around the house or create new projects. Furniture designing, crafts, and woodworking are great projects for a workshop like this.

Often though, transitioning a garage to a workshop can be, well, messy. The organization is tough, especially in an area that is being repurposed. Here are three secrets to turning your garage into a workshop easily.

Keys to Successful Garage Workshops

1. Organize with purpose.
Transitioning a garage to a workshop means the things you will need in it are going to change. If you try to continue storing the same things in it and merely add things to it, it is going to become cluttered and overwhelming. Don’t merely use the garage for something new, redesign it to fulfill its new purpose.

  • Tools. We’ve all seen workshops and sheds filled to the brim with random tools and supplies that are never used. Clear the clutter and focus on the primary work you will be doing in your new workshop. If you still need something, but it does not fit in line with the work you will be doing in the workshop, find a new place for it.
  • Workbench. Start with a workbench that is suited to the work you will be doing. They come in many sizes to accommodate different tasks, so pick one that maintains enough space in the garage while giving you ample room to work.
  • Storage space. Once you have your garage cleared out of unnecessary clutter and have moved in the right workbench, utilize the remaining space to store the tools you need. Place the tools you will use most often closer to your workbench. If your workbench does not have drawers, consider using toolboxes or a tool bag to keep your tools handy. If you use a pegboard, designate specific areas for your tools with labels. Save enough space near your workbench to place diagrams, notes, or designs, so that you can refer to your plans as you work.

Large items, and tools that are not used as often can be stored further from the workbench. Consider all your space, even overhead space. If you choose to use overhead space, store boxed tools in clear containers with similar tools, so that you reduce the number of times you must take things up and down. Secure overhead ceiling units, to prevent accidents.

2. Create a safe work environment.
You might think that having tools and a bench is all you need to work in a workshop, but that’s just the beginning. If you calculate all the time you will be spending in the workshop, you might consider the wear and tear you are going to feel. Set up the garage so that it is something you want to be in, instead of just needing to be in. Set it up so that it will maintain your health.

  • Anti-fatigue mat. Consider purchasing an anti-fatigue mat, which will maintain a better posture by reducing the stress on your muscles. Fatigue can be caused by reduced blood flow and oxygen to your muscles from standing on hard, cement floors for long periods.
  • Air Conditioner/Heater. Temperature control is essential to maintaining good health while utilizing a workshop. Depending on the size and design of the garage, hot days can be relieved using a window unit air conditioner or a floor fan. Use a space heater with a tip-over safety feature on cold days to prevent illnesses and injuries caused by low temperatures.
  • Lighting. Poor visibility increases the risk of injury. Not only can this create a fall hazard, but also can cause injuries by grasping or handling tools blindly. There are many lighting options for workshops, including recessed lights, track lights, fluorescent lights and more. BONUS: Did you know that ample lighting increases accuracy and promotes good quality craftsmanship? Keep your work in great shape with the right lighting. Also, as social media sharing becomes rapidly more popular, videos are being shared from home projects. Create your do-it-yourself instructional video, or project video-log from your own workshop easily with the right lighting.

3. Make the structure work for you.
You could have used a shed for a workshop, but you wisely chose a garage. What makes this workshop superior? The garage structure has built-in advantages, and with simple add-ons, you can enhance these structural features to make the perfect workshop.

  • Garage Door Screen. The first structural advantage you will use is your garage door. Its wide opening allows light and air to come in while you work, with little effort or energy spent. To prevent other elements from interfering with your work, apply a garage door screen that will keep everything else out. Our Fresh Air Screens are easily installed, and easily removed and stored for the winter. Installation does not require changes to the structure and won’t interfere with the garage door mechanism. There are retractable and non-retractable screens to match your primary vision for your workshop. Bonus: Does your garage have a portable generator? Garage door screens help ventilate the workshop, preventing harmful fumes from building up and staying in the garage.
  • Window screens and shutters. The other structural advantage you will have are windows. Like the garage door, these will help you control temperature and lighting elements. Window screens can be helpful, similarly to using a garage door screen. Also, consider using blinds or shutters to help control the lighting that comes through.
  • Electricity accessories. Another advantage of turning a garage into a workshop is the electricity that is more than likely already available without extra work. Be careful not to store tools and materials near the outlets to prevent fires. Use dedicated circuits for large appliances and power tools that are used often. Keep these locations in mind when organizing your storage space.
